Body Sustainability: A new paradigm regarding abdominal strengthening

In lieu of crunches, use of the Yamuna balls can yield longer and toned abdominal musculature and create space between the ribs and the pelvis.

The current trend in abdominal work is to tighten and strengthen with crunches or other exercises where the lower ribs knit together bringing the ribcage and pelvis in closer proximity. Yamuna Zake speaks often about the concept of body sustainability. Her message is that this type of abdominal strengthening brings compression to the torso. In lieu of crunches, use of the Yamuna balls can yield longer and toned abdominal musculature and create space between the ribs and the pelvis. It is a new way of thinking….a new paradigm.

Yamuna states, “I bumped into a man and every time he meets me he says he must do some work with me. He just turned 50. He tells me that everyone tells him how great he looks. He has been working out mainly focusing on bodybuilding for close to 30 years. His neck looks like it only has trapezius muscles. His chest is so tight and pulled into the sternum that it looks like his ribcage never expands when he breathes. Yes, he has 6-pack abs! I smiled knowing that what he worked to create all these years will not last going into the next decade of his life. If you have built tight contracted muscles, your joints will begin to restrict faster and your bones will age “all of the sudden.” This man looked at me and he spoke for the first time about needing to change his focus now for his future well being. We all need to rethink our body focus every decade to make sure we are doing what is best for our body now!”

Part of Yamuna’s philosophy of body sustainability is using the Yamuna balls to create length in the torso. Bringing increased space between the ribcage and the pelvis, developing long, lean, and toned abdominals, and lifting the ribcage yields wonderful results not only for your posture but also for pain relief from a nagging backache.

index_icon_3In her words, “body weight on the balls + breath = increased muscle tone.” Working the body 360 degrees can be accomplished with the Yamuna balls. A ball is just a ball without the proper education. Working with a certified Yamuna body rolling practitioner is important to learn how to roll correctly. Picking the right ball, deflating/inflating as needed, observing the precautions given, and listening to your body’s responses are all important aspects to understand with your Yamuna Body Rolling routine.

Having had a c-section 30 years ago left me with some adhesions and tightness in my lower abdominal region. Recurrent episodes of low back and hip pain had started occurring. Working with the Yamuna balls have lengthened the fascia and muscles, awakened my abdominal core, improved my posture and eliminated my back and hip pain. Having personally realized the benefits from Yamuna body rolling fuels my excitement for sharing this with my clients, giving them a tool that will promote body sustainability for each decade of their lives.
